ACC Support for employers
Resources and support available for employers when hiring disabled people or getting an employee back to work after an injury.
As an employer you have responsibilities if your employee gets injured, at the time of injury and during the recovery period.
The general process for employers if your team get injured is:
Report the injury to ACC: As soon as your employee is injured at work, you must inform ACC.
Support the recovery: Work with your employee and ACC to find suitable ways for them to recover at work. This may include modifying their duties or offering flexible work hours.
Provide the necessary support: You might need to adjust their tasks, workplace setup, or provide special equipment to help their recovery.
Follow up: Stay in communication with your employee and ACC to monitor the recovery process and ensure a smooth transition back to full duties.
By following these steps, you can help your employee recover while still contributing to the workplace.
Recovery support
To support the recovery of an employee under ACC, you should:
Maintain communication: As we mentioned earlier, it’s important to stay in regular contact with the employee to understand their needs and progress. They may be off for a short or very long time, you could adjust what ‘regular’ looks like for your situations.
Offer modified duties: If the employee cannot perform their usual tasks, offer alternative duties or reduce their workload to suit their recovery. This will help them get back into the swing of things faster and ensure they keep a good routine.
Create a supportive environment: Make adjustments in the workplace, such as providing special equipment, rearranging the workspace, or offering flexible working hours, to help the employee recover.
Work with ACC: Collaborate with ACC and follow their recommendations regarding recovery plans, including any required medical appointments or treatments.
Encourage gradual return to work: If the employee is able, allow them to ease back into their normal duties, gradually increasing the hours or intensity of work as they recover.
Stay Informed: Keep track of your employee's progress and update ACC if there are any changes to their situation.
