Discover child supports available to support our rangatahi and tamariki in the Taranaki region.

If you live in New Plymouth, Hāwera or anywhere in the Taranaki region, there are support services available for you and your children.

Our Taranaki region is part of the Midland | Te Manawa Taki region through Health New Zealand. It includes Taranaki Base Hospital and Hāwera Hospital. There are several Child Development Services to support children and families in your region.

You can access Child Development Services through a referral from your GP (doctor), Plunket nurse, school or other education support, or a paediatrician at the hospital. Take a look at the providers in your region below.

Taranaki Child and adolescent community centre

This is a coordinated service for all tamariki and rangatahi with extra needs, based in the Taranaki Base Hospital. They provide

  • Paediatric Clinics

  • Specialist Nursing Services

  • Therapy, including Occupational Therapy, Physiotherapy, Speech-Language Therapy and Visiting Neurodevelopmental Therapy

  • Social Work

  • Psychology assessments and interventions.

They also do before School Checks (including Vision and Hearing Assessment) and run Whānau Pakari – A Community Based Assessment and Intervention Programme to help children and young people overcome weight issues.

Hāwera Child and adolescent community centre

This is a coordinated service for all tamariki and rangatahi with extra needs, based in Hāwera Hospital.

It supports the same services as the Taranaki centre.
