    Discover child supports available to support our rangatahi and tamariki in the Hawke's Bay region.

    If you live in Napier, Hastings, Havelock North, Wairoa and Waipukurau or anywhere else in the Hawke’s Bay region, there are support services available for you and your children.

    Our Hawke’s Bay region is part of the Central | Te Ikaroa region through Health New Zealand. It includes the Hawke’s Bay Fallen Soldiers’ Memorial Hospital, Napier Health, Wairoa Health and Central Hawke’s Bay Health Centre. There are several Child Development Services to support children and families in your region.

    You can access Child Development Services through a referral from your GP (doctor), Plunket nurse, teacher, or a paediatrician at the hospital. Take a look at the providers in your region below.

    Child Development Services Hawke’s Bay

    The Child Development Service is based in Hastings and supports developmental needs and disabilities for Hawke’s Bay children from 0 to 16 years old.

    Working alongside parents, caregivers and whānau, the team of thirty aim to enable children to develop well and live good lives.

    They offer

    • Therapy support (including post-operative and hydrotherapy)

    • Continuing support for babies struggling to meet development milestones.

    They also help family apply for equipment and modifications which will support children to flourish.

    They support children with conditions including

    • Autism

    • Cerebral palsy

    • delayed development

    • down syndrome (Trisomy 21)

    • neuromuscular disorders and syndromes with developmental delays.

    What to expect when visiting the team

    They’ll assess your child’s development by chatting with you and your tamariki. This could also include reaching out to teachers or others involved in your child’s life.

    Some areas they could assess include:

    • motor skills

    • feeding

    • self-care

    • specialised equipment or adaption for your home

    • language and communication

    • play and learning

    • intellectual function

    • health

    • neuro-behavioural conditions.

    If you think your child may have ADHD, ADD or has continence issues, Hawke’s Bay Paediatrics team is the one to talk to.

    If your child has speech or language issues but no other needs, you could reach out to a private speech language therapist .
