Find out where to hire vehicles designed specifically for disabled drivers and passengers.

Whether you have permanent disability, are recovering from an injury, or care for someone who requires a disability-equipped vehicle, hiring a mobility vehicle could be a good transport solution for you.

Vehicle options

There are organisations in New Zealand that hire out mobility vehicles for short-term and long-term use. These vehicles have been built or modified to accommodate wheelchairs and/or be driven by people with certain physical impairments.

The kind of vehicles on offer include:

  • wheelchair accessible vehicles

  • hand controlled vehicles – these have been modified so all driving can be done by hand, including accelerating and braking

  • left foot accelerator vehicles

  • swing out seat vehicles – these feature a seat that swings out and can be detached, allowing wheelchair users to transfer in and out of the vehicle.

Benefits of hiring a mobility vehicle

The key benefit of hiring a mobility vehicle is it can give you more freedom to travel when and where you want. If you or a family member regularly uses wheelchair accessible taxis or public transport to get to work, appointments, and run errands, you could investigate whether hiring a mobility vehicle is a good option.

If you care for someone who uses a wheelchair, but you don’t own a mobility vehicle, you could look at hiring one short-term if you want to go on a holiday or day trip.
