Disabled parking spaces and permits

If you have a mobility impairment you can apply for a mobility parking permit for your car.

A disability parking permit is known as a mobility parking permit. It lets you park in mobility parking spaces. Mobility parking spaces are wider so you can put a wheelchair or walker alongside the car. They’re identified by a wheelchair sign painted on the ground.

  • ➡ Do you sometimes feel confused, disorientated, or anxious due to a disability and need support?

  • ➡ Can you walk, but not far and need mobility aids?

  • ➡ Do you need help to move around safely because of a disability?

  • ➡ Are you a wheelchair user or unable to walk?

  • ➡ Do you struggle to breathe, get pains and sometimes get anxious so you need support to get to places?

Setting up a disability park as a business

To make sure everyone can easily access public spaces, businesses with car parks must provide mobility parking spaces for our disabled community. The New Zealand Building Code (NZS 4121) says that car parks must be designed to be safe and convenient, but that can be hard to do if you haven’t experienced using a mobility van or modified vehicle.

To support our inclusive businesses in New Zealand wanting to create good disability parking, we put together this guide.
