Special Olympics New Zealand is all about giving people with intellectual disabilities the chance to shine through sports.

They offer fun, inclusive sports programs that help athletes build skills, stay fit, and make lasting friendships. As part of the global Special Olympics movement, they bring athletes together from all over the country to compete and celebrate their abilities.

Here’s what they offer:

Sports Training and Competitions

Special Olympics NZ provides training and competitions in over 15 sports, including Athletics (Track and Field), Basketball, Football /Soccer, Swimming, Tennis, Golf and more!

Local, regional and national competitions

Athletes get the chance to compete in local and regional events. These are a great way to improve skills, get involved, and have fun with friends.

Every four years, athletes from around the country come together for the National Summer Games. It’s a big event where everyone celebrates their hard work and achievements!

World Games

Some athletes even get the chance to represent New Zealand at the Special Olympics World Games—a global competition where they meet athletes from all over the world!

Unified Sports

Special Olympics also has Unified Sports, where athletes with and without intellectual disabilities team up to play together. It’s a wonderful way to promote friendship and inclusion.

Healthy Athletes Program

Special Olympics helps athletes stay healthy with things like health screenings and advice from medical professionals, making sure everyone is feeling their best.

Promoting Inclusion

A big part of Special Olympics NZ’s mission is to create a more inclusive society. They focus on breaking down barriers and showing the world that everyone, no matter their ability, has something amazing to offer.

Volunteers and Community

Volunteers play a huge role in Special Olympics. Whether it’s coaching, organizing events, or just cheering people on, the community is strong, supportive, and welcoming for everyone.

Special Olympics New Zealand say it's not just about sports for them —it’s about growing confidence, developing life skills, and building relationships in a positive, supportive environment.

So, if you're keen to get active or support someone to get out there and engaged with our community, find your closest club on Special Olympics New Zealand's website.  (external link)
