Hamilton Gardens
Explore the history, context and meaning of gardens. Each tells a story and offers an insight into a different civilisation.

Rather than focusing on plant collections, at Hamilton Gardens the emphasis is on different types of garden design. Traditional botanic gardens concentrate on plant collections, conservation, research and education, while Hamilton Gardens has the unique concept of showcasing the cultural meaning and context of gardens over the past 4,000 years.
Throughout history, gardens have been a way of expressing the important philosophical ideas of their time. In some respects the story of gardens reflects the story of civilisation and attitudes to the natural world.

The game changer is the Changing Places facility!

We visit the gardens frequently as it's in our home city. It's generally very wheelchair friendly and has lots to see and do for families of all ages.
Go! It doesn't matter who you take, you can be assured that they can be treated equally for their toileting needs. The gardens are literally world class (having won many international awards) and they have events like the annual teddy bears' picnic and summer festival.
Highlight: Knowing that everyone has their toileting needs met in a safe and dignified way is the best feeling in the world.
Lots of wheelchair accessible pathways have been installed to allow for fairly full access for those with mobility issues, but the game changer is the Changing Places facility! The Changing Places room means we can change our daughter without using the toilet floor. It has a hoist for those that are too heavy to lift. It's simply amazing.
