Northable internships support disabled youth into employment
NorthAble Disability Services is looking for interns for its Āhei internship programme!
July 24th, 2025

They’ve been running this successful programme for a few years now as a way to connect young disabled people with employers across Whangarei.
Whether you have experience or are still in school or looking for a way into a job, you can take your first steps into the workforce through Āhei.
“It’s more than just an internship—it’s a pathway to meaningful employment, personal growth, and greater independence.” - NorthAble
How do I get in?
If you’re 15 to 24 and based in Northland with a disability which has lasted six months or more, you’re likely to be eligible for the programme.
Intakes for the Āhei programme start in August and November and run for 20 weeks.
What should I expect?
You’ll officially become an intern! As an intern you’ll get real work experience with a local organisation and get the support and training to help you succeed.
It’s not paid, but at the end of the programme the team will work with you to help you find paid employment. The internship can help solve the ‘Catch 22’ problem you might find when you’re job hunting of needing experience to get a job, but needing a job to get experience!
How It Works:
Apply – You apply for the programme and meet with NorthAble mentors to talk about your goals and decide if the programme is right for you. NorthAble will aim to match you with a work placement that suits your capabilities, goals, and interests.
Prepare – You take part in a three-week introduction course to get ready for your placement.
Internship – You start your work placement and attend weekly workshops to build your skills.
Support – NorthAble mentors guide you through your internship and work with your employer to make sure everything goes smoothly.
Employment – After your internship, the NorthAble team helps you find paid work.
Apply for the Āhei internship programme on the NorthAble website.
What makes a great Āhei Intern?
Motivation – You’re keen to learn and have the goal of finding long-term employment.
Openness – You’re willing to try new things and work with others.
Reliability – You show up, follow through, and give your best.
Team Spirit – You enjoy being part of a group and building connections.
Self-awareness – You understand your disability as an individual or have a willingness to understand and advocate for yourself (NorthAble can help with this).
Āhei is about more than just getting a job—it’s about building confidence, skills, and a future. If you’re ready to take the next step, sign up today.
