The Halberg Foundation is all about helping people with physical disabilities enjoy sport and recreation.
They’re dedicated to making sure everyone, no matter their ability, can get involved in the sports and activities they love.
Here’s what they do:
Supporting Participation in Sport
Halberg works with people with disabilities to help them join in on sports and physical activities. Whether it’s offering advice, support, or just making sure everyone has the tools they need, they’re there to make sport accessible and fun for all.
Halberg Grants
One of the awesome things Halberg offers is Halberg Grants. These grants help individuals and community groups with disabilities cover the costs of getting into sport—whether it’s for equipment, coaching, or travel. This helps remove any financial barriers to participating.
Adapted Sports Equipment and Programs
Halberg helps make sport more inclusive by providing special equipment and tailored programs. From adaptive bikes and wheelchairs to specialized coaching and training, they make sure that everyone can enjoy the physical and mental benefits of sport.
Ambassador Program
Halberg has a Disability Sport Ambassador Program where athletes with disabilities share their inspiring stories. These ambassadors encourage others to get active, showing that anything is possible if you set your mind to it.
Inclusive Sports Events
Halberg organizes inclusive events that give people with disabilities the chance to compete and show off their skills. They also run programs that focus on how sport can help improve physical health, confidence, and overall well-being.
Raising Awareness and Educating Communities
Halberg works hard to spread the message that sport is for everyone, no matter their ability. They provide educational resources for schools, clubs, and organizations, helping create a more inclusive, welcoming environment for everyone who wants to get involved.
Working Together
Halberg partners with other organisations—local, national, and even international—to make sure sport and recreation opportunities are available to people with disabilities all over New Zealand.
Their partners include:
Sports Organisations and National Governing Bodies (for example Sport New Zealand), to ensure that people with disabilities have the support they need to participate in mainstream sports.
Disability-Specific Organisations like CCS Disability Action, Paralympics New Zealand and Special Olympics New Zealand (see more on them here).
Community Groups, Clubs and educational institutions (like schools etc) to help them create inclusive environments where people with disabilities can participate in physical activities.
Corporate and Funding Partners (like The Lion Foundation, The Tindall Foundation, and ASB), to help fund their programs and services. These partnerships allow Halberg to offer grants and other support to individuals and community groups, ensuring that costs don't prevent anyone from participating in sports.
Health and Wellbeing Organisations
Local Government and Regional Councils, to advocate for better facilities, programs, and services for people with disabilities.
At the heart of it, Halberg is all about removing barriers to sport and helping people with disabilities live active, healthy, and fulfilling lives.
