The Matariki celebration, a deeply significant time in Māori culture, offers a beautiful opportunity for Mokoia Intermediate ākonga (students) to connect through art with the theme ‘We all sit beneath the same stars’ in conjunction with ‘Under the Stars’ annual exhibition
Ākonga will present vibrant, multi-material, collaged relief sculptures of a Super Star character inspired by Matariki or one of her eight whetū (stars) children, embodying the essence and stories behind these celestial figures. For many ākonga, this will be their first experience exhibiting their artwork, making it a milestone in their creative journey. This exhibition not only showcases their talents but also introduces them to the Rotorua Visual Arts Community, fostering a sense of belonging and pride.
