The Tauranga-based team are passionate about opening up new horizons for our community.  Their aim is to create a national iconic vessel for New Zealand's disability community, similar to the Spirit of Adventure or Outward Bound.

How much does it cost?
"The service is free, we do not charge for the service. If you wish to make a donation that would be very much appreciated but entirely up to you, there is no obligation at all."

Where are you based?
"We are based in Tauranga where we run the vast majority of our trips, but occasionally we manage to run trips out of Auckland (the Viaduct) and Whangarei (Marsden Cove Marina).

Do I need to bring fishing gear or bait?
"No, we are happy to provide all the fishing equipment and bait for the day. We’ll have the gear for the fish we are targeting, all you need to do is turn up for the day and have fun."

What happens if the weather forecast is not good?

"If the weather conditions are not appropriate for your trip we will postpone it to another day. We’ll try to give you notice if the weather forecast isn’t good, but ultimately the skipper reserves the right to postpone a trip because safety is our highest priority."

How long are the trips?
"Our trips are usually around 4 hours. We often run trips from 10am to 2pm but weekend trips may be slightly longer. Once your trip is confirmed we’ll send all the details well in advance of your trip."

Is it safe?
"Wish for Fish practices an extremely high level of safety and has strict policies in place, complying with all Maritime New Zealand safety standards including experienced, qualified skippers and crew."

Accessibility

The boat is designed with wheelchair users in mind and can fit up to 10 at once, alongside 39 other passengers including the support staff and crew.
It has an:

  • Accessible bathroom with a full loop gantry crane
  • Onboard Wheelchair lift to provide access to the whole boat
  • Increased stability through being a 'high displacement' catamaran
  • Accessible pathways throughout
  • A quiet space for sensory support

What does the venue say?

A day out on the water can bring so much joy and can provide visitors with lifelong memories – we witness this every trip – we call these magic moments.

Something significant happens when people are empowered to go fishing. They move from being someone helped, to being a provider. This is a fundamental shift in identity, which allows our people to not be defined through the lens of their disability or life challenges.

When paired with a strong sense of adventure, comradery and achievement, the positive outcomes, excitement and lift in self-esteem is tangible. You can see it in the faces, eyes and body language of those on board.

This year we aim to provide magic moments and lifelong memories for over 1,000 visitors.
